Limestone is another
category of flagstones. Limestone is calcareous sedimentary rocks with a
geological nature to occur in layers or beds which are splittable and
non-splittable. Splittable beds are worked by hand to yield natural
slabs and tiles of desired thickness while non-splittable limestones are
first mined in form of blocks and then are split with aid of cutting
machines to get sawn surface finish. Limestone flags are also softer
than sandstones and because of presence of calcareous minerals; their
surface can be subjected to polishing. Like marble and granite,
limestone flags in polished surfaces attract a lot of eyes.
