Sandstones are most commonly and widely used flagstones. Sandstone is fomed by stratified sedimentary rocks principally composed of silica. By geological nature, those sandstone which are splittable along bedding planes find more commercial acceptance than non-splittable ones as sandstone flags.

In splittable category, thin layers or beds of sandstone from a thickness range of 0.5" to few feet are cleaved or splitted by hand chisels or cut on gang saws in desired thickness.

Non-Splittable sandstone are quarried in block form and then are cut into slabs on machines just like marble or granite.

Hand Splitted sandstone slabs and sandstone tiles will show natural surfaces while machine cut slabs/tiles will show sawn surface finishes.
